SWAC A Student Wellness Advisory Council, or SWAC, is a student organization, whose advisor is a school foodservice professional.
· This program is one of a kind. It brings a nutrition and wellness program into schools, where the students learn nutrition and wellness information and then teach that information to their fellow peers and community
· Students take pride and interest in making the food service program more responsive to their needs
· One of the goals of SWAC is to combat against the childhood obesity epidemic
o Students learn how they can improve their eating pattern and physical activity by making small and gradual changes
o A SWAC can make changes in school policy and environment to support healthy lifestyle choices
o A SWAC provides opportunities for students to learn how to apply nutrition and wellness into their everyday lives and practice healthy lifestyles
· Students become advocates of nutrition and wellness to their fellow peers and community
· SWAC serves as a communication bridge between students, administrators, school food service personnel, faculty and the community
· SWAC organizes events for their school to celebrate
o National School Breakfast Week,
o National School Lunch Week,
o Florida School Breakfast Week, and
o National Nutrition Month
· FSNA provides a ‘SWAC of the Year’ Award to honor the Student Wellness Advisory Council Chapter that has shown enthusiasm, as well as the desire to participate in as many activities as possible
